Weekly Puzzler #231: Green Balls in the Treetops

This week I’m going to feature a puzzler that you may be able to identify, but do you know anything about it? You can see it growing in the treetops, especially in southern states and in oak trees. From a distance this puzzler looks like a roundish shape in the trees and some trees have a really lot of them.

Here’s a photo:

So two things for this puzzler: 1. Can you identify it? and 2. What can you tell us about it?

Here’s the answer to weekly puzzler #231.

  1. I always thought there were squirrel balls of leaves for storing food. Can’t wait to be enlightened!
Welcome back! You have been missed❣️

Hi Arden, Thanks for your comment and taking time to write. I have missed writing and my little nature community. Squirrels do make nests in trees and you can often see them in the treetops during this time of year. But the puzzler is not a squirrel nest, as the “ball” is green, and made of living material, not dead leaves as in the case of the squirrel. I will write more on this next weekend. Have a great one! Nice seeing you here.
