Spring in the Smokies: Guess What I Saw?

Have you ever experienced spring in the Great Smoky Mountains? There is always a lot going on and it is a glorious time to be there. In early spring the dogwoods are blooming along the creeks and the soothing calls of spring peepers can be heard in the evenings, especially in vernal pools in Cades Cove. The air is filled with bird song, and, as you can see from this video, lots of birds and animals are busy doing their thing to attract mates.

Male turkeys displaying their tail fan.

If you want, come join me as I watch some turkeys in a field, the male strutting proudly for the female, who doesn’t really have all that much interest. Then, listen, and see if you can identify the sounds coming from the background… it is music to my ears!

Hope you enjoyed that moment in the Smokies. I’ll see you again soon!

I think a lot of people dont see how beautiful turkeys are.. when the sun shines on their feathers its like a rainbow of metalic colors

Nanci, I totally agree! Their feathers really are awesome in the sunlight. I think most people probably never get to see one up close enough to appreciate the iridescent feathers! Thanks for reading. I hope you are starting to see some signs of spring up north. Happy day!
