Turkeys

In the United States alone, 245 million turkeys are killed every year. They have no federal protection at all, meaning the workers who are with these animals have no boundaries or no accountability. They can abuse the turkeys all they want and never be punished.

At Thanksgiving, 46 million turkeys are killed so Americans can celebrate a holiday meant to give thanks. How can you talk to me about peace, love, or gratitude with a dead animal on your plate? At Christmas we kill 22 million more turkeys.

Turkeys have been genetically bred to grow so quickly that they are often crippled under their own immense weight. With no anesthesia, their toes and upper beaks are cut off with hot blades.

Most turkeys are killed at just 3-5 months. Their natural lifespan is up to 10 years.

Turkeys enjoy having their feathers stroked, just like a dog enjoys getting pets and belly rubs. They enjoy listening to music, can run 55 miles per hour and fly up to 35 miles per hour. Like chickens and cats, they have unique personalities.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says, “At the slaughterhouse, the survivors are hung upside down by their weak and crippled legs before their heads are dragged through an electrified “stunning tank,” which immobilizes but doesn’t kill them. Many dodge the tank and are still completely conscious when their throats are slit. If the blade fails to cut the birds’ throats properly, they’re scalded alive in the tank of boiling water that’s used for feather removal.”
