The pileated woodpecker is our biggest woodpecker of 22 species that live in North America. It nests exclusively in dead trees, or snags, as they are often called. Pileated woodpeckers rarely use the same nesting cavity twice, a fact that is great for other species of birds and mammals who will take advantage of old woodpecker holes to roost, nest and use as shelter. According to Audubon, “Pileated Woodpeckers drum slowly, accelerating and then trailing off at the end, distinguishing them from most other woodpeckers that drum at a steady rate. They can drum close to 17 beats per second and will perform 10 to 30 beats before they take a break. This behavior helps them defend territories and attract mates as a part of courtship displays.” This gorgeous bird was spotted recently right outside my sunroom window. The squirrel and birds are enjoying the suet that I had out when temperatures were in the twenties. Insects, berries, and seeds—key food sources in warmer months—are often gone or hard to find. I make my own suet using 1 1/2 cups shortening (look for palm oil free options) • 3/4 cups nut butter (any kind, but salt free) • 3 1/2 cups wild bird seed— I use black oil sunflower seeds as these appeal to a lot of birds and are high in calories • 1 cup quick oats • 1/2 cup corn meal Add berries or other nuts Suet should not be put out in warm weather because it can spoil easily. #natureformysoul #natureismytherapy #naturetherapy #beautyiseverywhere #naturelover #natureismychurch #birds #reels #birdfeeding

Who else loves the sound of spring peepers? No matter what craziness is going on in the world, I know I can always find joy and peace in nature. Spring peepers are small tree frogs, only 0.7- 1.2 inches long! They usually lay their eggs in vernal pools, from 750-1200, which they attach to submerged vegetation. Males fertilize the eggs as they are laid.
