Weekly Puzzler #288: Round Face, Soft Feathers

Hello! Happy Saturday. Amazing the month of December is halfway over, and the winter solstice is next week.

When I looked back at all of the puzzlers through the years, I was surprised that this bird never made the list– at least not for its appearance. It WAS featured once, but for its call. So I thought I would make it the last puzzler of this quarter. I am hoping this will be an easy one for any of you who wanted to get in the drawing but just haven’t known any of the previous puzzlers.

This bird is a year-round resident of the entire eastern Untied States from halfway in Texas straight up to Canada. See if you recognize it:

I was going to use just this photo, but then thought better of that. It would be too hard! The headless bird.
This bird was actively hunting in a wetland.

It’s your last chance to get your name entered in the drawing to win a sampler pack of my greeting cards. I will pull one name tomorrow and then get in touch with that person, get your address, and send you the cards. There is no cost to you and all you have to do is use the reply box below to give a guess. And follow me on Instagram. I hope to hear from you.

Enjoy the weekend, and do remember in all of the hustle and bustle of the holidays to get outside and enjoy all the free gifts Mother Nature offers regularly.

Hi, Sharon, Oh, if only I lived in a mixed forest where I could see, hear and photograph a splendiferous Barred Owl, and find inspiration for my poems. And I have photographed using a true macro lens an adult female mosquito after it paid the price for invading the washroom at home. Up close it’s almost sci-fi with its big, black, round eyes.
More than one person has told me I should go to, or order in from, a restaurant for a Christmas meal for myself, but I decided instead to donate 50 British pounds to Fauna & Flora International to help fund the anti-poaching teams in Africa, so much needed now to save the elephants from extinction. Best wishes of the season to you and yours, Murray

Hey Murray, I do need to focus in on some mosquito larvae with my macro lens sometime. Not sure why I haven’t done this yet. Good for you for making a donation. I’m sure every little bit helps these important organizations. Best wishes to you too. I hope 2024 will bring you something to be joyful about.

Arden, me too– have you heard them going back and forth, sounding like a bunch of monkeys sometimes! Hope your weekend is going well.
