Weekly Puzzler 269: Handsome Reddish Songbird with a Black Head, Neck and Shoulders

Hello again! Our next puzzler is a bird that I see just about daily in my forested yard in western NC. Sometimes I hear it before I see it, as both the males and females spend a lot of time on the ground, digging through the leaves looking for insects to eat. They make a lot of noise as they’re doing this! They also spend a lot of time singing–their song says ‘drink your teeeaaaaaa,’ and they repeat this a lot. Sound familiar?

Here are a few photos. See if you recognize this bird:

This bird spends a lot of time hopping around on the ground
This bird has a long tail, a white underside, and a red eye. He is not easy to miss!

Rosalyn, it is! Another one right. Thanks for reading and taking the time to reply.

  1. I first knew it as a Rufous Sided Towee. But now i think it’s just called an Eastern Towee.❤️

Jo Ann, You’re right, they’ve changed the name. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all of those name changes! But thanks for reminding me.
