Weekly Puzzler #259: White Disco-Ball Flowers on a Tall Stalk

I spent some time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park this week, walking slowly and looking closely at all the flowers, insects and other interesting things to be seen in the forest there. Talk about a feast for the eyes! What could be better for the soul than spending time among towering trees and the lovely songs of birds singing in the forest?

I saw many of this next flower, blooming beside the trail. Its leaves look a little bit like the leaves of a lady’s slipper orchid, except there are more than two of them in a bunch. See if you recognize it:

The flowers can be pure white, or white tinged with pink.

As you can see the flowers like like mini disco balls, some of them sporting hints of pink along the edges. This wildflower is usually found in a rich, moist wooded area, often near oak trees. Also found on ridges and slopes. Have you seen it in a forest near you? Know what it is? If you want to guess, use the comment box below,

Jill! So nice to see you here! Thanks for taking time to write and for the compliment. Fireworks is an even better description than a disco ball. I’ll remember that one, thanks!

We’ve seen them together before but probably not since last spring. It’s hard to remember all of these lovely flowers we see only briefly once a year. It’s white clintonia, (Clinton umbellulata), also called speckled wood-lily, or white Bluebeard-lily.
