Weekly Puzzler #240: Early Spring Wildflower with Distinctive White Flowers and Fern-like Leaves

I went on a walk recently to a property owned by an organization called Conserving Carolina.  The narrow trail started out crossing a lovely, rock-filled river and then gradually made its way up the mountain to a giant rock face where a steady stream poured over the top and down the stone in a mesmerizing flow of dancing water. Like many trails in western NC in spring, this one had no shortage of wildflowers.

Lots of Trillium!

One flower that was very common was our puzzler for this week–a distinctive white flower that is shaped like mini pantaloons and has fern-like leaves. Check it out here:

Do you recognize this flower?
White and yellow flowers
Beautiful fern-like leaves
This flower was growing everywhere along the trail!
Does this look familiar?

Use the reply box below to give your guess, then check back next weekend to see if you were correct. Hope you get to spend some time outside this weekend looking for wildflowers and other interesting things. What’s blooming where you live? I’d love to hear from you!

Colleen! Nice to see you here! Yes, Of course you are correct— don’t you wonder who named this? But, it certainly is a fun, and fitting name.
