Weekly Puzzler #237: Maroon, Six-Petaled Flowers

I was out on a walk recently in South Carolina and noticed a bunch of small trees beside the trail with very striking and unusual flowers on them. The flowers hang from the stems of the tree, like upside-down umbrellas. They are a gorgeous maroon color and when I pulled one down to look closer, could see that each flower has 6 distinct petals with a greenish center. 

Have you seen these in a forest near you? These trees are common in moist forests in the eastern United States. Here are a few photos.

  1. I going with paw-paw. I associate them with the south. I don’t recall them in western NY.
