Weekly Puzzler #215: Aggressive, High-Climbing Vine with Three Broad Leaflets

If you live anywhere in the south, it’s pretty likely you’ve seen this next puzzler. It’s a vine that is super aggressive. When you see it, it is usually covering everything in sight. No plant, building, tree, fence or other structure is off limits to this very prolific vine. It has 3 broad leaflets that can be up to 4 inches across and is said to grow as much as a foot per day. In no time at all, it can smother pretty much anything in its path.

See if you recognize it in the photos below. And though it looks a bit like poison ivy, it is not.

Here are some leaves.
Here it is devouring the landscape beside the road.

Are you familiar with this vine? If you want to guess, use the comment box below and then check back next weekend to see if you are correct.

Have a great weekend. Happy June!

  1. Kudzu! It’s edible and you can make baskets out of it. There is some thought that it can be used to treat alcoholism.
