Weekly Puzzler #198: Zebra-backed Bird with a Red Cap

Hello and happy May!

Do you put out a bird feeder to attract birds to your yard? If so, you are not alone. More than 52 million Americans have bird feeders in their yards! It is a great way to get to see the birds a bit more closely and to begin to learn some of their habits.

Last week’s puzzler was a white-breasted nuthatch, a bird that will visit a feeder. Here’s another, check out these photos:

A suet feeder will attract many birds.
Here’s another angle.

As a bonus, are the birds pictured males or females? What kind of bird is it? If you want to guess, I’d love to hear from you! Just use the comment box below the post.

Have a great weekend! See you again soon.

Jock, the reason you’ve never seen red on the belly is probably because the bird wasn’t right in front of you–the red is not very bright and not very easy to see. But you are right about the identity of the puzzler. Great job! Thanks for taking time to comment.
