Weekly Puzzler #177: Yellow, Brain-like Ball

Hello all! Happy Saturday and Happy December! Amazing to think we’re only a month away from a new year!

I was on a hike recently, at a park in Missouri and noticed these dense, larger-than-a-baseball “balls” on the forest floor. There were several on the ground in varying sizes. They were very heavy and reminded me of a brain.

Check them out.

Do you know what they are? Any guesses?

You have only a few more chances now to be entered in the quarterly drawing to win a sampler pack of my greeting cards. The more times you guess and are correct, the more chances you’ll have to win. Use the comment box below if you want to try.

Have a great weekend! Do make some time soon to get outside and enjoy the peace and beauty of nature. December is a crazy month that seems to fly by every year–Don’t forget to make some time for YOU.

  1. Hedge Apples or (I looked this up) Osage Orange. People in farm country would keep them scattered around their stairways and basements to supposedly deter spiders and other bugs. We used to see the trees sometimes back when the farms still had fence-rows.

Jock, thanks for writing! I did not know all of that. I simply know them as Osage Oranges but it is always fun to hear some firsthand information from people who know. I will have to look into the idea of them deterring spiders and bugs. It will be interesting to see if there really is something to this or if it just is myth like so many other things we hear about nature. I will add your name to the drawing pool!
