If you live in Western North Carolina you’ve likely seen this next plant as it it very common here in the forests, especially along rivers. Seems like every trail I’m on that meanders along a river has this shrub beside the path. It is endemic to the southern Appalachian region, from Virginia south to Georgia. These photos were taken a few months ago– the shrub will look different now as it will have white flowers that hang on the arching stems.
