Weekly Puzzler #223:Striking Black and White Bird With Iridescent Wings

My next bird is one that I saw frequently on my trip west this summer, though I didn’t take many photos of it. Several times while we were driving I saw a whole flock of this bird in the top of a small tree or on a fence in a field. It was quite a sight!

This handsome bird lives in the western states, up into Canada and Alaska. It has a black, heavy bill and a very long tail, and is in the same family as crows and jays. Depending on the light, this bird may look all black and white, or in the sun, may appear iridescent blue-green on its wings and tail.

Here’s two photos:

Note the black bill and long tail.
This bird has a white belly and underparts.

I wish I could show you more photos, but that’s all I have! I hope you have seen this bird on your travels or possibly where you live. It is a striking bird that’s fun to watch. Know what it is? Then I’d love to hear from you–use the comment box below to give your guess, then tune in next weekend to see if you are correct.

Have a great weekend!
