Do you ever find yourself wondering what animals frequent your yard, or favorite trail in the woods? Do you sometimes see tracks or other signs that give you an idea, but only leave you wanting to know more?
You may recall my mentioning a trail camera that I was gifted (best gift EVER!!) and some posts about what I saw. Well, in the last few weeks I have been setting the camera up in different locations on our 17 acres of forest here in western North Carolina, and have been amazed at the activity!
I usually walk around the woods, looking for a worn path that I am sure someone, though not a person, is using. I can tell because the vegetation is matted down and or there are less plants in an area where it looks like an animal has been by. I recently found such a trail, not far from my house, out in the woods. The path was worn down to ground, and so I set up the camera and left it there for two weeks.
When I retrieved it and looked at the footage, I was amazed to discover the level of nightly activity there. It’s a regular super highway for animals! Raccoons and opossums were the most common trail users, sometimes walking by multiple times in a night.
I have collected the most interesting captures and put them in the movie below. Check it out to see what happens while we sleep…
I am still hoping to capture a mama bear with her cubs or a bobcat, or even a mama opossum with her babies on her back. Did you know opossums are North America’s only marsupial? Or that the females give birth to babies, called joeys, that are the size of a raisin? For more amazing opossum facts, check out a past post I wrote called 10 Things you Didn’t know about opossums.
Every time when I retrieve the camera, it is like Christmas morning– the anticipation is high and I can’t wait to see what I got.
Have you witnessed any interesting wildlife lately? Do you too own a trail camera? If so, I would love to hear from you. Please use the comment box below to share your experiences.
