A few years ago I was kayaking in western North Carolina, in a river emptying in a big body of water called Lake Santeetlah when I noticed some bizarre gelatinous globs under the surface. Upon closer inspection, they looked like huge jello masses, most attached underneath the water to a plant or fallen tree. It was July.
I had definitely never seen anything like it and wondered what they were. Eggs? If so, from what, as they didn’t look like any eggs I had ever seen. Were they some kind of seeds or freshwater creature? It was a mystery!
Look at my photos. Have you ever seen this in a pond or lake, or river near you? (To note here, I now have identified these and know they can be found throughout North America, so it is possible you could have seen them even if you don’t share my western North Carolina backyard.)
If you want to guess, give it a go! This is the last chance to be entered in the quarterly drawing as I’ve decided to pull the prize a week early so it will arrive to the winner before Christmas. This is your last chance! To qualify, you must be a blog subscriber and answer the puzzler correctly! I will pull a name next weekend to see who is the winner.
Have a great weekend! Here in western North Carolina they are calling for more than a foot of snow! Woo hoo, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! I can’t wait! I’ll let you know next week what happened, as it could turn to rain. My fingers are crossed.
See you again soon.
I hope THIS is the scene in my yard today–a winter wonderland to get us in the mood for the holiday!
I live here in WNC too and visit Beaverdam Lake often. Never have seen anything like this. Can’t wait for you to tell us the secret.
Happy Holidays, Sharon. You add beauty to my life.
Thank you, Flo, that means a lot to me. I appreciate you. May your holidays be special!
You told me what they were and I still can’t remember. Does that mean anything?
It only means your memory is not perfect! It was a long time ago! Thanks for reading.
