Weekly Puzzler #167: Wooly Leaves and Tall Spike

Regardless of where you live in the United States, you’ve probably seen this next plant. It often grows in abandoned lots, along roads, in wild fields where nature has taken over. When the plant first comes up, the wooly leaves, in a whirl shape, are most noticeable. To the touch they feel as soft as animal fur. In its second or third year, this plant then gets a tall stalk that can be reach nearly 10 feet tall! When you see a field with many of these, it is impressive. The top of each stalk has tiny flowers, usually yellow, all around it. These attract a variety of insects, including bees and butterflies.
