Finding peace at the lake… my church is always there. The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives might be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. I’ve been watching a pair of pileated woodpeckers outside my office window! What a treat! This is our largest woodpecker, almost the size of a crow. It is between 15 to 17 inches tall with a wingspan of approximately 30 inches. The pileated woodpecker digs rectangular holes in trees to find ants. As you drive or walk along, and if you’re observant, you might notice caterpillars crossing roads and trails. They are on the move, searching for a safe place to spend the winter. Some adult moths enter a dormant phase called diapause— like a chipmunk hibernating for the winter. Each species has its own strategy— sometimes overwintering as eggs, caterpillars, pupae/cocoons(moths) chrysalids (butterflies), and even adults. Many, many species spend the winter in leaves so it’s essential to leave these on the ground rather than raking them up or chopping them into hundreds of pieces to use as mulch. If you like birds, you need to understand that moths, and butterflies are necessary because 96% of our songbirds REQUIRE insects, and especially caterpillars, when feeding their babies. These birds may come to your seed feeders, but when they are raising babies they NEED caterpillars!! So you can help by NOT raking your leaves. Can you help me spread the word?? Let’s stop thinking of leaves as something we need to “cleanup” and start thinking of them as essential.
