Weekly Puzzler #269: White Fuzz on a Tree Trunk

The other day I was out taking pictures and noticed a bright white spot in a tree across the field. What was that, I wondered, moving closer to get a better look.

Here’s what I saw when I got close. Have you ever seen this before? Wondered what it was?

White fuzz on the tree trunk.

Do you have a guess about what this is? If so I’d love to hear from you. Use the comment box below the post to share your thoughts. Hope to hear from you!

Have a great weekend. See you again soon.

Renate, yes indeed, they are woolly aphids! Most people have never heard of them. Thanks for following along. Happy weekend to you!

Thanks Jane, you too! It’s always great to see you’re still following along even after all of these years.

      1. I have a client who has a white puffy mass of something on the bottom of the hemlock… I though at first wooly aphids but then asked Steve Pettis. … he said…
This might be a harmless slime mold. https://henderson.ces.ncsu.edu/2021/06/slime-molds-not-a-pest/

If so, It should go away eventually. Otherwise it may be some kind of wood rotter which would be not good.

never seen this before. Can I send you a pic? I think it may have been tiny woolly aphids!
