It’s Hot Out There So Don’t Forget to do This!

With record temperatures across the United States, I want to remind you how important it is to keep your hummingbird feeders clean and free of mold.

It may not seem like much but a little black mold to a tiny bird like our hummingbirds can mean death. The mold can cause their tongues to swell and then, a slow death through starvation. Even baby birds can be affected and die.

Feeders should always be clean and mold free.

It would be better for you NOT to feed the hummingbirds at all then to feed them at moldy feeders. Hummingbirds can and will find natural nectar sources if you remove your feeders. If you don’t have time to keep the feeders clean, please don’t feed them at all.

Your hummingbird feeder should NEVER look like this!
This feeder and these hummingbirds in Ecuador are at risk of death from mold at their feeder. Please don’t let your feeder look like this.

If you want to read more about this, or want to learn the best way to clean your feeders, you can check out a past post, called If You’ re NOT Doing This, You May Be the Cause of Hummingbird Deaths: 8 Things You Need to Know

Also, if you want to read more about hummingbirds, here are 10 things you might not know. Or here are ten of the most common questions answered about hummingbirds.

I hope you’ll join me in telling everyone you know! We don’t want to love these birds so much that we are the cause of their deaths!
