Butterfly on Ironweed


Did you know you can determine the sex of a Monarch butterfly just by looking at it when its wings are open? Check out this photo from our puzzler:

There are two black spots on the back hind wings, right in the middle. Do you see them? These are scent glands and only the male has them. He uses them to help attract mates. Females lack these black dots. Here are some photos:

Here the black dots are more obvious.
Here is a female. Notice the lack of black dots on the hind wings.
Here is a male and female monarch side by side. The male is on the right.

Well now you know how to tell a male from a female Monarch butterfly. Next time you see one on a flower, I bet it’ll be easy for you to look more closely to determine the sex.
