Weekly Puzzler #222: Songbird with a Short, Stout Bill and Long Tail

Hello and happy weekend to you! I hope you are staying safe and having a great weekend. Ready for September? It’s only a day away now.

If you’ve been following along with the last batch of puzzlers, you know they’ve all been birds, from my travels to Colorado this summer. My puzzler for this week is yet another western bird, this one a bit challenging as there are many regional variations of this bird. We see them here where I live on the east coast, but they look different than the birds pictured below so it’s a bit tricky.

Check out the photos:

Weekly Puzzler #222 is a sparrow-sized bird with a short, stout bill and a long tail. This is a male.
This bird is normally seen hopping around on the ground.

It is a sparrow-sized bird with a short, stout bill and a long tail. You will normally see them in forests, hopping along the ground. They have white outer tail feathers which are noticeable when they fly away quickly when you get too close. They are among the most widespread songbird in North America.

Any guesses? If so, use the comment box below. I look forward to hearing from you!

Have a great rest of your weekend.

  1. That’s a tougher one for East coasters but it is fascinating how many variations of this bird there are around the country
