Last summer at this time I was on a road trip, heading west towards Texas and then Colorado. While camping at a site on a lake in Arkansas, I witnessed this mass emergence of insects. They were clouds of them on leaves, on people’s campers, in the air over the water. It was impressive!
Here are some photos:
Know what they are? Or anything about their lifecycle–like where they start their lives, how long they live, what they eat, etc. Use the comment box below to give your guess identifying this insect, then stop by again next weekend to see if your answer was correct.
Mayflies!
Yes! You are correct! Thanks for guessing.
Mayflies (shad flies)? I’ve encountered them along the Mississippi.
Yes, aren’t they impressive when you see that many?
As long as you don’t get out of the car.
Yes they do like to land on anything that’s around huh, Including people!
Long tail camper clingers
Never heard this nickname before! Doesn’t mean it’s not correct! Thanks for always reading.
Yes, we spent a summer in Weaverville, AL and witnessed swarms of them hatching on the river!
That sounds interesting! They are pretty impressive when there are large numbers of them hatching out all at once like that.
