Weekly Puzzler Answer #24

puzzle24-7060229The picture for this week’s PUZZLER is from a northern copperhead snake. When copperheads are less than a year old, they have a bright yellow tails which fade as the snake ages. They use their tail as a lure to tempt animals they might want to eat like lizards, frogs, toads and other prey.

Northern Copperheads are venomous. Did you know that copperheads are super important predators of rodents? And that they are not aggressive? While they are venomous, they will only bite if stepped on or otherwise threatened. If you leave them alone, they will return the favor. PLEASE DON’T KILL THESE SNAKES!

To learn more about copperheads, including how to recognize one and where they live, check on Monday as they will be this week’s Creature Feature.

In the meantime,   Click HERE  for a great site comparing northern copperheads to other snakes.  (Site details snakes of VA but has wonderful information and many of these snakes are found throughout the eastern US)
